French shipyard DCNS delivered the Royal Malaysian Navy's (RMN's) first -ever submarine. Officials marked the on-t ime delivery of the first of two diesel elect ric Scorpene submarines that have been ordered by Kuala Lumpur.
The RMN took formal delivery of Scorpene submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman at an official handover in Toulon at tended by RMN Chief of Staff Admiral Dato'Sri Aziz Hj Jaafar.
It is a major milestone for the RMN following the completion, in late December 2008, of KD Tunku Abdul Rahman?s final sea t rials demonst rat ing full operat ional and combat system capabilities. The trials included successful firings of Black Shark heavyweight torpedoes and missiles.
KD Tunku Abdul Rahman is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia early in the second half of this year. The second of the series, KD Tun Razak, is s cheduled for delivery in late 2009.

Thai military has purchased more ERJ135 from Brazilian airline company Embraer. The ERJ 135 will be used for t ransporting civilian and military personnel.
The order will be delivered in 2009 and it adds to Thailand's 2008 purchase of two other ERJ 135 airplanes, one of which was used for the Royal Thai Army and the other for the Royal Thai Navy, Embraer said.
Howakltswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) has been cont racted to provide South Korea with six addit ional Type 214 submarines. The deal has been st ruck between the South Korea procurement authority and a consort ium comprising HDW-part of Hamburgbased ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG-and Marine Force Internat ional.
A batch of six convent ional submarines will be supplied with the first batch being built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. Tenders for the product ion of the second vessel will be submit ted in summer 2009.
Key features of the 1,800-ton Type 214 include an airindependent propulsion system based on hydrogen fuel cells, and a modular const ruct ion principle that can be adapted to customer requirements. According to HDW, these six submarines will be “almost identical” to the first batch.
