Weather

The climate is generally hot and sunny. Due to its proximity to the Equator, humidity is very high, as are temperatures. Lightweight clothing is advised. To check on today's weather, log on to Malaysian Meteorological Service.


Visa

No visas are required for those coming from Commonwealth countries except Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Citizens of Israel, Serbia and Montenegro are not allowed to enter Malaysia without prior approval of the Malaysian Government. Those coming from Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand are required to have a visa unless they are on a Social or Business Visit for less than one month. For most other countries, a visa is not required for a Social and Business Visit unless the duration exceeds either one or three months, depending on the country. Thus it is best to check with the nearest immigration or diplomatic mission office. A disembarkation form must be filled up and handed to the Immigration official upon arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least six months.


Currency

The local currency is called ringgit (dollar) and sen (cents). There are 100 sen in a ringgit. There are currency restrictions in place and the ringgit is no longer convertible abroad at present. All residents and visitors must declare the amount of foreign currency and ringgit they are bringing into the country on the Travelers Declaration Form. Residents and non-residents are allowed to bring in and out of Malaysia ringgit notes not exceeding RM1,000 per person. Non-residents are permitted to carry out of Malaysia foreign currency notes (including travelers cheques) not exceeding the amount brought in. Those who intend to carry ringgit notes, foreign currency and travelers cheques in excess of the permitted amount must obtain prior written permission from :

Language

The official language is Bahasa Malaysia. However, English is very widely spoken and understood. Other languages spoken in the country include Cantonese, Mandarin and Tamil.
